How Pool Windows Are Installed

The installation process behind structural acrylic pool window systems.

Understanding Installation

Pool Windows Are Structural Systems

Pool windows are not decorative additions. They are structural systems that must resist continuous hydrostatic pressure while maintaining watertight integrity for decades. This demands precise coordination between multiple construction trades.

Installation sequencing is critical. The concrete structure, waterproofing, acrylic panel, and finishing trades must work in a specific order. Changing this sequence or skipping steps compromises the installation.

Waterproofing and rebate preparation must be coordinated before tiling can occur. The acrylic panel must be installed and sealed before any finishing work around the window opening.

Acrylic behaves differently to glass under structural load. It flexes rather than fractures, and this flexibility must be accommodated in joint design. The silicone seal allows controlled movement while maintaining watertight integrity.

Installation Process

The Six-Stage Installation Process

Step 01

Engineering & Design

Every pool window installation begins with project-specific engineering. Panel thickness, rebate dimensions, and support configurations are calculated based on water depth, span dimensions, and structural requirements. Engineering certification is provided for building approval.

Step 02

Formwork & Rebate Preparation

Concrete formwork is constructed to create the precise rebate dimensions specified in engineering drawings. The rebate provides the structural housing for the acrylic panel and must be formed to exact tolerances. Aquaplex provides rebate formers to ensure accuracy.

Step 03

Waterproofing Coordination

Pool waterproofing must be completed before panel installation but coordinated with the silicone joint design. The waterproofing membrane terminates at specific locations within the rebate to ensure compatibility with the structural silicone seal.

Step 04

Acrylic Panel Delivery

Panels are delivered with protective film intact and positioned using appropriate lifting equipment. Large panels may require crane access. The panel is carefully manoeuvred into position within the prepared rebate.

Step 05

Structural Silicone Installation

Structural silicone is applied between the acrylic panel and concrete rebate. This creates a watertight, flexible joint that accommodates differential movement between materials. The silicone requires specific cure time before the pool can be filled.

Step 06

Finishing & Pool Filling

Tiling and finishing work is completed around the panel after silicone installation. The pool is then filled gradually, allowing the panel and structure to adjust to hydrostatic loading. Protective film is removed as a final step.

Critical Sequencing

Why Tiling Should Not Occur Before Installation

A common construction sequencing error is completing pool tiling before the acrylic panel is installed. This creates multiple problems that compromise the installation.

The rebate surfaces must remain clean and free of tile adhesive residue for proper silicone adhesion. Contaminated surfaces prevent structural bonding and risk seal failure.

Panel positioning often requires minor adjustments during installation. Pre-installed tiles limit access and may be damaged during panel manoeuvring.

The silicone joint between panel and tile must be applied after both elements are in place. This finishing joint conceals the structural silicone beneath and creates a clean aesthetic transition.

Aquaplex provides detailed installation sequencing documentation for every project, ensuring all trades understand the correct order of operations.

System Configurations

3-Sided vs 4-Sided Installation Requirements

Horizon View

3-Sided Systems

  • Open-top rebate configuration with three supported edges
  • Rebate depth typically 40-60mm depending on panel thickness
  • Waterproofing must terminate below the waterline within rebate
  • Silicone joint designed to accommodate panel deflection at unsupported edge
  • Often integrated with infinity-edge or vanishing-edge pool design

4-Sided Systems

  • Fully enclosed rebate with support on all four edges
  • Most structurally efficient configuration for equivalent spans
  • Continuous waterproofing around full rebate perimeter
  • Rebate tolerances critical for uniform silicone joint width
  • Ideal for below-grade viewing rooms and basement applications

Frequently Asked Questions

Pool Window Installation FAQs

How are pool windows sealed?

Pool windows are sealed using structural silicone specifically formulated for permanent immersion in chlorinated water. The silicone creates a flexible, watertight bond between the acrylic panel and concrete structure. Joint design and silicone selection are specified during engineering to ensure long-term performance.

Are pool windows waterproof?

Yes. Properly installed pool windows are completely waterproof. The combination of precisely formed concrete rebates, coordinated waterproofing membranes, and structural silicone joints creates a permanent watertight seal. Aquaplex systems are backed by a 30-year structural warranty.

Can pool windows leak?

When correctly engineered and installed, pool windows do not leak. Leaks typically result from incorrect rebate preparation, incompatible waterproofing systems, or improper silicone application. Following Aquaplex specifications and using certified installers eliminates these risks.

When should waterproofing occur?

Pool waterproofing must be completed before panel installation. However, the waterproofing membrane must terminate at specific locations within the rebate as specified in installation drawings. Waterproofing should not cover surfaces where structural silicone will be applied.

Can pool windows be retrofitted?

Retrofitting pool windows into existing pools is technically possible but significantly more complex than new construction. It requires structural assessment, concrete cutting, waterproofing remediation, and careful sequencing. New pool construction is the preferred approach for pool window integration.
