Architectural Intent

This Brighton residence required an acrylic pool window that would transform a basement utility space into a dramatic underwater viewing room. The client brief emphasised visual impact through lighting—the pool becoming a luminous architectural element visible from multiple interior vantage points.

Hazler Pools collaborated with Aquaplex from initial design through final commissioning to achieve a seamless integration between the pool structure, acrylic panel, and interior finishes. The result is a viewing experience that appears effortless while concealing significant structural engineering.

Aquaplex has worked with Hazler Pools across multiple high-end residential projects, with this installation continuing a long-term collaboration focused on architectural quality, technical precision, and premium pool construction outcomes.

Technical Coordination

Project Requirements

Structural Integration

The pool window was designed as a load-bearing element within the concrete pool shell, requiring coordination with the structural engineer to ensure proper load transfer through the rebate system.

Waterproofing Coordination

Multi-stage waterproofing was specified to work in conjunction with the acrylic panel seal system, ensuring permanent water retention without reliance on surface membranes at the viewing aperture.

Rebate Preparation

Precision formwork was constructed to achieve the tight dimensional tolerances required for the 4-sided horizontal rebate. Panel fit was verified prior to concrete pour.

Installation Sequencing

The acrylic panel was installed after concrete curing but before internal pool finishes. This sequence ensures proper seal contact and prevents damage to the optical surface.

Visual Finish Requirements

The client specified a seamless transition between the underwater tiled interior and the viewing room. Edge details were designed to minimise visual framing while maintaining structural integrity.

Why Acrylic Was Specified

Cast acrylic was selected for its superior optical clarity, impact resistance, and ability to flex under hydrostatic load without fracturing. The material maintains 92% light transmission even at the thickness required for this span.

Structural Viewing Requirements

The 4-sided configuration allows the panel to transfer load to all four edges of the concrete rebate, achieving maximum structural efficiency. This enables a thinner panel profile for the given aperture dimensions.

Long-Term Performance

The installation is engineered for a 30+ year service life with minimal maintenance. The sealed rebate system accommodates thermal movement and concrete shrinkage without compromising water retention.

Minimal Visual Obstruction

The rebate design conceals structural supports within the concrete frame, presenting an uninterrupted viewing plane. From the viewing room, the water appears to be held by the acrylic alone.
